Redrafted proposal

After doing some research into local newspapers me and Georgina have decided to re-draft our proposal so as to reflect better on our findings and feedback we got whilst creating our newspaper. I shall be using the RIVALING concepts to show a more focused proposal.

R- We will be trying to represent the youth of Bromley but aiming for the older generation (16-20) as we found out that they are more likely to read a newspaper than the younger generation and also by aiming our newspaper towards a more selcted group we can focus more on the issues that effect and also interest our the group we are trying to represent.

I- Our ideology hasn't changed much and we would still like to treat our customers with repect but I believe we are now going to be taking on a more friendly approach to them rather than being overly formal.

V - We are still going to be selling this newspaper for free but we have found out through our research that ad placement is critical and we will be using more of our front page for advertising than before.

A - Our audience is still the same but as I mentioned before we will be targeting the slightly older audience (16-20) so as we can use more sophisticated language and also do more stories on issues that concern their age group.

L - Our language will also remain the same and we will be aiming towards trying to keep it friendly and engaging for the reader.

I - We have looked into institutions that run and operate free newspapers such as The New Shopper and have found out that the best way to get our newspaper running would be to approach Gannett and see if they would take on our newspaper. The positives of doing this is that it allows us to be operated by a company who already have huge success and also they will have great credibility so people will know that they can trust our newspaper.

N - Our narritive will be that of a tabloid paper and we will have headlines and mast heads that are commonly seen in tabloid papers such as the ones I researched (e.g. Bromley Times) We will be following these conventions because it will give our customers a sense of comfort and they will easily be able to navigate our paper because they will know roughly how everything is layed out.

G - Our genre will be that of a tabloid, free, local newspaper that is aimed towards the older teenagers of our local borough of Bromley.

Target Audience

The target audience for local papers in general are local residents of the area that the newspaper is distributed. The age group would most likely be middle aged people as newspapers don't really interest the younger market unless they are about celebrity gossip or sport in which case the newspaper is more of a magazine than a newspaper. These local papers are aimed at working c;ass citizens as the news includes information about stuff that would concern them and information about stuff that they are interested in.
The papers that me and Georgina looked at were The News Shopper, The Bromley Times, Sevenoaks Chronicle and The Metro. These are all free, local newspapers around the area that we live in so we thought that these would be the perfect choice of newspapers to look at as we are hoping to launch a free, local newspaper in the area so if we look at the target audience for these papers (which are all long running and successful newspapers) then we should be able to launch our newspaper as well. The target audience for these newspapers are the same as the target audience for most local newspapers, middle aged, working class citizens that live in the local area that the newspaper is distributed.
Because we are also launching a free local paper our target audience is going to be the same as the newspapers above but we will also be aiming to capture the attention of the slightly younger reader. We saw a gap in the market and decided that there wasn't a free local paper in the area that was aimed towards older teenagers and younger adults (early 20's) so we decided that we could exploit this and try and write about issues that would interest our target audience.
We will measure the success of our paper by looking at the average circulation of local free newspapers and see if we can match that figure or hopefully beat the average circulation. As the papers we are looking at have been around for a long time they have gained a name for themselves and as our newspaper is new we wont have the same fame as them so it will take some time to get the same figures as them but hopefully by the 6 month mark we will be on par with the local newspapers. If by 6 months we have not come close to matching their figures then we will know that our newspaper is not a success and we will dis-continue it.

Distribution of free newspapers

Me and Georgina are looking at how free newspapers are distributed to their customers. I used to work as a paper boy so I have first-hand experience of one of the ways in which free newspapers are distributed.
First I am going to look at how newspapers use paper boys to distribute their newspapers

Newspaper institutions

Me and Georgina are looking at the companies who own and operate the free, local newspapers we are looking at. We are particularly looking at the News Shopper and Bromley Times, asa they are both free and deal with the local information around our area.
From our research we have found that the News Shopper are owned by a UK branch of the American company Gannett. The UK branch is called Newsquest. They run 17 daily paid-for titles, more than 200 weekly newspapers, magazines and trade publications and a network of award winning web sites.

Gannett is the owner of Newsquest and operate in America. Gannett Co., Inc. is a leading international news and information company. In the United States, the company publishes 84 daily newspapers, including USA TODAY, and nearly 850 non-daily publications. Along with each of its daily newspapers, the company operates Internet sites offering news and advertising that is customized for the market served and integrated with its publishing operations. USA TODAY.com is one of the most popular news sites on the Web. The company is the largest newspaper publisher in the U.S.

We also looked at The Bromley Times as they are the most local newspaper to us. We found out that they are owned by Archant who are the UK's largest independently owned regional media business.

So as we can see both newspapers are local and free and deal with issues in our area but the big difference is the fact that The Newshopper is owned by Newsquest who are a subsidiary of a American company, Gannett. So whilst the paper deals with local issues its owned by a not so local company. This is different to The Bromley Times who are owned by Archant who are a UK based company. Now I believe that this is a much better way of running the company as they know what the British people want, like and are interested in because they are based in the country that they are reporting on where as the Newsshopper is run by an American company who will have a very different view of Britain than those living in Britain.

Researching local free newspapers

This is the front page for the New Shopper, a free local Newspaper around Bromley. The conventions of a free local newspaper can be observed here such as the title of the newspaper is at the top of the page in bold lettering. There is then a big, shocking headline that catches the readers attention and gets them to want to read more, the words are aimed to scare you and the sentence doesn't really make a great sentence but you get all the information you need in 4 short words There is then a picture on the page that is unrelated to the main headline and is again a picture aimed to draw the audience in. In this case it is a picture of a family with a small child and your immediate reaction is to think the shocking headline is related to the small child.

There are adverts on the front page right under the title of the newspaper and this shows how the newspaper company are paying for the costs of running a newspaper, via advertising. The fact that there are alot of adverts of the front page (there are some more on the right hand side) shows that it is expensive to run a newspaper and they have to rent out a lot of space on their main pages to keep up the costs.

The main story starts on the front page but continues inside and finishes the story and this is again to make the reader want to read the paper and inevitably see some more adverts on the inside.
